The design of CETUS evolved from Catherine Kanner’s portraits of the central characters from Melville’s Moby Dick; the text, Melville, Shakespeare and Milton. The accordion binding allows the men to be viewed as a group; the crew of the Pequod. Allwyn O’Mara developed this elegant design with the accordion attached into the front cover using a unique anchor piece behind the front page. The binding allows the reader to view the book conventionally or opened out. John Robinson, The Tortoise Press, printed the series of the engraved portraits and text. The evenness and clarity of the printing is outstanding. A star image embossed on the cover appears through-out the text. It is the constellation Cetus, The Whale. Each of the eleven stars represents a character from the book, the curved line represents the arch of the earth’s horizon. The endpapers were hand painted making each book unique. CETUS' design was intended to reflect the sober and beautiful tone of Moby Dick. It is dedicated to Herman Melville and his masterpiece.
